The Challenges of 2017…The Opportunities of 2018.

When America’s fourth largest city faces the challenges that we did in 2017 we have two choices…give up or DIG IN.  We hope that our fellow citizens of Houston and Katy have chosen the latter!  Memories of Harvey will never disappear entirely, but this challenge has brought us together to reflect during this holiday season.

This is a time for gathering with family and friends.  This is the time to celebrate the fact that we are still together through the tribulation.  Our family-owned business at Laird Landscaping will be “breaking bread” with loved ones this time of year as we hope you will be.  Maybe you have relatives coming to town to celebrate…we hope so.

Please know that Laird Landscaping will be there to help in 2018 just as we have for decades past.  We are proud to be residents of the Houston area and voted Katy’s best landscaper.  If you are cleaning up or rebuilding in 2018 we will be there!  Please visit our website when you have a minute at lairdlandscaping.com.  Merry Christmas to one and all.

A Landscaping Plan for 2018.

That was quite a year…wasn’t it?  For those of us who are still cleaning up around here the memories of Harvey are vivid, but the optimism for Houston and Katy homeowners is strong.  Start with the basics…the lawn, the sprinkler system, trees, shrubs, drainage.  It all may need to be addressed.

What may be best for you as a Houston area homeowner is a planner then a doer.  If the hurricane left its mark on your property it would be of great help to have an expert landscape planner come to your home and tackle the rebuilding project step by step.  By the summer of 2018 Harvey could be a distant memory!

The right choice for residents of the Houston area for decades has been Laird Landscaping.  In good times and bad the one that was voted Katy’s best landscaper is Laird Landscaping.  This family-owned business will be there for you as you make plans to recover in 2018.  When you are ready we will be here.  Call (281) 578-2795.

Starting from Scratch.

Thanks to Harvey many residents of Katy, Houston, and the surrounding area must start from the beginning when it comes to landscaping.  Take a deep breath.  You WILL bounce back!  Hiring the right landscaper who feels your mission is essential.  You may need to retain the services of someone who will do this project in phases.

By tackling your landscaping project in phases, you can space out the expense.  It is important to find a landscaper who has flexibility…especially now.  What if you want a landscaper who does all of creative design for you, then you proceed with the job on your own knowing that they are always there for you?

All of these elements come from Katy landscaped design professionals Laird Landscaping.  They were voted Katy’s best landscaper for a reason.  That reason is flexibility.  They have learned over decades to cater to the customer’s wishes.  After Harvey, you need a friend in the landscaping business.  That friend is Laird Landscaping at (281) 578-2795.

Flood Prevention Through Landscaping.

This is a topic that is all too familiar around our area these days. If the drainage in your yard is less than adequate it can lead to flooding and ultimately ruin property and landscaping. Landscape drainage solutions can be incorporated in two ways: Surface water drainage, below ground drainage, or perhaps both.

Surface drainage systems pull excess water from hardscapes, planting beds and areas where water tends to collect and provides a path on the surface for the water to move freely.  Sub-surface drains prevent erosion and protect drainage sensitive plant material or lawns.  This drainage removes water from an already saturated yard.

Whatever you want for your home the one thing you DON’T want is flooding!  Harvey may be the worst we will see in the future, but it won’t be the last.  Now is the time to make that important decision and contact Houston and Katy drainage experts Laird Landscaping.  They will have your property prepared.  Call (281) 578-2795.

Time to Sprinkle.

Have you ever heard it said “is this a good time to install a sprinkler system”?  The answer is always YES, even after Harvey.  Nearly any time of year in the moderate climes of Houston is a good time to get a new, more efficient system.  However, there are several advantages to purchasing and installing a sprinkler system in the autumn.

There is also something to be said about avoiding the difficulties of installing a new sprinkler system in the heat of summer. Our soil can get so hot and dry that you'll see more damage to the lawn/landscape as well as irrigation pipe not able to be buried to the proper depth.  Why subject yourself to that?  Now is the time!

In the Houston area three generations of home and business owners have trusted Laird Landscaping.  They are your Houston and Katy Texas sprinkler installation professionals.  It is already mid-September so make it a priority to have someone from the Laird Landscaping team come out to your home or office for an estimate.  Call (281) 578-2795.

Building from the Ground Up.

Before you begin new home construction or home improvement project, please consult your civic association regarding possible deed restrictions.  This is vitally important in the Houston area because you may not purchase a building permit until you sign a sworn deed restriction affidavit.  You must agree to any and all construction restrictions.

As you move through the process you must determine exactly which permits are required for your project and which are not necessary.  Will you need a general contractor?  How long is each permit valid?  Are you able to file an extension?  What about your sidewalk and driveway.  What permits are required there?

There is plenty to consider.  When you get down to landscaping and fencing the job gets easier.  Simply call Laird Landscaping.  Otis Laird and his team have been one of Houston’s top landscapers for decades.  It is the icing on the cake of your new Katy and Houston area home!  Laird Landscaping an area institution at (281) 578-2795.

Harvey Was No Gentle Six Foot Rabbit.

Harvey has come and gone and left us with the most devastating destruction our area has ever known.  We hope and pray for the safety and future of your family wherever you live in the Houston area.  An event such as this makes us all reflect on how precious and fragile life can be in our home town.

One thing is certain…Houstonians WILL come back stronger than ever!  It was not that long ago that major flooding dealt us a set back and we battled back from that one.  A special thanks to all of the amazing Americans who have helped us recover with their generosity.

Time to Sow.

As the Bible tells us there is a season for everything.  The time to plant in the Houston area may be now.  Soon, the summer heat and humidity will give way to the more moderate days of autumn.  Look around at your property.  It may very well be time to begin planting for enjoyment and beauty in the years to come.

Here are some reasons why planting now in our area is a good idea-

1.  The ground rarely freezes, so a tree or shrub can take root over the next 6 months.
2.  Planting a tree now will provide shade next summer.
3.  Planting in the fall or winter allows those trees to flourish in the spring.
4.  Less watering is needed this time of year.
5.  You can add instant fall color to your property.

The where, the when, the how, and the whom are all important factors in your landscaping plans.  Why not choose the Houston area landscaper that was recently named Katy Texas’ best landscape company?  That is Laird Landscaping lending its expertise to tree and shrub planting for decades around here.  Call them today at (281) 578-2795.

Ahhh…Cooler air is on its way.

Fall is right around the corner.  And with the change in your personal schedule comes a change on your property.  Simply put, Autumn is the best time to plant trees in the Houston area.  It is almost like clockwork.  When Labor Day comes you should take serious note of your property and the trees that ARE on it as well as the ones you WANT on it.

Why plant trees in the fall around Houston and Katy?  Well, it has been proven that newly planted trees thrive in the cooler weather.  They will spend the winter integrating into the landscape so that they are strong and healthy when the summer of 2018 comes to Houston with all of its searing heat.

Selecting the proper trees, planting, and caring for them should be done with the help of a professional.  For decades we have trusted Laird Landscaping.  The Laird family has cared for your tree planting needs throughout the Houston area and will do so for many decades to come.  Call Laird Landscaping and discuss your desires at (281) 578-2795.

Only the Best Yard Drainage.

Your home deserves the best drainage possible.  Need we remind you of the torrential rains in the Houston area not so long ago?  If you choose not to think ahead then it is bound to happen again and you will definitely be caught off guard because you did not call a professional landscaper for your property’s drainage.

Just a modicum of rain will create an eyesore on your property.  The grass will die in those spots and you can’t run your lawn mower over puddles.  Here is another treat for you…people track mud into your home from stepping in the goo!  One more thing, if that free-standing water is a haven for breeding mosquitoes.

When was the last time that you thought about proper drainage for your Houston area home?  Now is the time to contact the company that was named the best landscaper in Katy.  That is drainage expert Laird Landscaping.  Please give them a call so they can devise the best plan for your property at (281) 578-2795.

A Definition of Hardscaping.

First of all, what is the difference between hardscape and landscape?  Hardscaping is a term that is typically used by people to describe anything used in an outdoor space design that is made of natural materials, but not living materials such as trees, shrubs or other plants and grasses.  That could include things like concrete walls, retaining walls, stone pathways, etc.

Landscape is the term with which we are most familiar.  These are the terms that refer to all  softer living materials. Plants, turf or sod grasses, and organic ground covering materials of many types can be considered landscaping.  When hardscaping and landscaping meet in proper measure that is when the magic happens on your property!

To achieve that perfect balance of the two you should consult the Houston hardscape and landscape professionals at Laird Landscaping.  As you have been sitting in your backyard this summer you may have envisioned a different look.  Laird Landscaping will help bring that look to fruition.  Give them a call today at (281) 578-2795.

What Type of Grass Do You Want?

Wait a minute…is it legal in our state yet?  No…not that type of grass.  We are talking about the kind in our yard - the green stuff that we walk on all year.  We are truly blessed in the Houston area to be able to grow lush, green grass all year with our temperate climate.  It is something that we should not take lightly.

Keeping your lawn lush and green should NOT be taken lightly.  Do not be fooled into thinking that “grass is grass”.  There are several types that each have their own benefits, such as Bermuda which is drought tolerant and rapid growing.  Zoysia a fine textured grass that grows well in partial shade.  There is Ryegrass used during cold months.

An expert will help you decide which type of grass to plant in your Houston lawn and exactly when to plant it.  That expert has been Laird Landscaping.  For well over three decades they have been Katy and Houston’s landscaping professionals.  For all of your home and office landscaping needs call (281) 578-2795.

Stop Talking about a Patio Cover.

That’s right…stop talking and start planning.  This is the hot Houston summer that you finally decide to protect your patio from the sun’s rays.  A patio cover, by definition, is a structure attached to your home providing shade.  From there almost anything that your imagination can create is possible!

Where should your patio cover be built?  How big do you want it to be?  What is the difference between an open and solid roof?  A latticed roof allows light to filter through, but that means heat as well.  Should it be freestanding?  A structure that is NOT attached to a building is commonly called a pergola.

A properly designed and constructed patio cover will have a profound effect on you and your family’s enjoyment of your backyard.  This, of course is not to mention the profound effect it will have on your home’s worth.  Houstonians know just whom to call.  The area’s patio cover experts, Laird Landscaping.  Pick that phone up now and call (281) 578-2795.

It’s Swimming Season!

Those are 3 glorious words aren’t they?  Fortunately, swimming season in Houston is a lot longer than it is for our northern neighbors.  This is the year.  It is the time when you have decided to treat your family to the joy of having your own backyard in-ground swimming pool.  It will add value to your home as well as so much future fun.

We live in Houston partially because of the weather.  Shouldn’t you treat your loved ones to a swimming pool?  Let’s not forget about another huge benefit.  Regular laps in the pool are great for your long-term health.  A swimming pool may soon be added to your beautifully landscaped patio and yard.

Now that you have made the decision what is the next step?  Here in Southeast Texas it is your swimming pool design and landscape professional Laird Landscaping.  Begin the process right away by having someone come out to your home and give you an estimate on the project.  Call Laird Landscaping at (281) 578-2795.

Just the Right Amount of Sprinkle.

A proper sprinkler system is the final complement to a beautiful Houston area yard.  If it is correctly installed and maintained it will distribute the perfect amount of water to all areas of your lawn during any drought we may experience.  Water is essential to all life…and your acreage is no exception.

The type of grass you have on your property will depend on whether or not you need a constant source of water.  You may need a home irrigation system instead.  Planning and then purchasing the correct system should be done with the help of a professional.  You cannot afford to make a mistake in having the wrong system installed!

This is precisely why you choose Laird Landscaping to plan and install the right one.  They are the Houston area’s sprinkler system installation professionals.  The first step is to give them a call and have them visit your home in Katy or anywhere around Houston to get an on-site estimate.  That number is (281) 578-2795.

Considering Flagstone.

What about this idea for your patio?  Is it right for your Houston and Katy area home?  Flagstone is a great material for patios primarily due to its narrow packed joints.  What does that do?  Well, it allows water to permeate instead of running off.  They have a beautiful, organic look because of their shapes and colors.

What are some of the benefits of a flagstone patio?

1.  They look perfectly natural
2.  They hold up…durability
3.  Grass and moss will grow between the stones
4.  Their rich colors jump out at all who see them

This spring strongly consider using flagstones to create a patio that is the envy of the neighborhood.  It also will add value to your home.  That is a nice residual benefit!  In Houston and the surrounding area all you have to know is the name Laird.  Laird Landscaping is the Katy professional at installing and recommending the right flagstone.  Call them at (281) 578-2795.

Nothing Better than Word of Mouth.

We can blow our own horn and advertise all we want, but nothing beats the honest praise that we get from our satisfied customers.  If you have been in business for decades and have done right by your constituents they can speak the truth about your integrity, hard work, and effectiveness.  It is very humbling that those years of effort have not gone unnoticed.

We would like to direct your attention to www.lairdlandscaping.com.  Just recently we added a “blue ribbon” to our website.  If you would click on that you’ll read the words of owner Otis V. Laird.  Even better are the 110 reviews gleaned from three and a half decades of great work.  Would you take a few minutes and read some of those?

After that it should be easy to choose a landscaping service in Fort Bend County, The Western Suburbs of Houston, or Southwest Houston.  We cannot tell you how much we appreciate the people we have helped and how much we look forward to serving your future landscaping needs.  Give us a call at (281) 578-2795.

DO Fence me in.

Good fences make good neighbors.  Perhaps you have heard that old adage?  It has never been more true.  A well-constructed, secure fence around your property not only separates you from your neighbors it also adds a great deal of value if you ever decide to sell.  This is a great time of year in the Houston area to install a fence.

What fencing is right for you?  Here are some ideas…

1.  Wood…it is the most popular and affords great privacy.
2.  Aluminum…very attractive, but it may compromise security.
3.  Wrought iron…this is a distinctive design that requires more upkeep.
4.  Chain link…much cheaper when you are looking at business as well as personal.
5.  Electric…typically invisible to keep your pooch in the yard.

There are several other types of fencing available to you.  For the right choice on your property contact Houston and Katy area fencing expert Laird Landscaping.  Trey and his team will come out and take a look at what you are expecting to do and make recommendations.  Then they will install the fencing that is right for you.  Call Laird Landscaping today at (281) 578-2795.

Adding a Waterfall to Your Property.

What is one of the most soothing sounds that you can think of?  How about the sound of gently flowing water?  I feel the stress flow away with the very thought of it!  Your backyard is your haven at the end of a day or on the weekend.  It can be the oasis that you envision with the addition of waterfall.

Not only is it beneficial for the humans, but Houston’s native birds will come calling when the water is moving more than they do when it is stagnant.  It will not only serve as a vacation-like retreat it will also add innumerable value to your property.  That is a great deal to consider, but know that it deems professional advice to do it right.

There are so many different shapes and sizes of water features.  Wouldn’t you like one of Houston’s top ten landscaping companies to come out and give you suggestions?  Call the #1 landscaper in Katy TX.  That would be Laird Landscaping.  They have helped area home owners beautify their property for over 3 decades.  Give them a call at (281) 578-2795.

Small Business Landscaping in Houston.

You pay close attention to the landscaping around your home.  If you own a small business in the Houston area have you devoted the same time and attention to that project?  In this case, it may literally affect your bottom line.  The “curb appeal” of your business will often encourage or discourage someone from walking in the front door.

Any good business owner will make sure that the interior of their business is immaculate, but what about the exterior?  An entrance area that has unkempt grass and leaves around it looks like “The House of the Seven Gables”…not very inviting for customers!  You should strongly consider monthly or bi-monthly maintenance and special landscaping projects this year.

If you want to continue appealing to the public in 2017 and beyond contact the best in the business.  That’s Houston small business landscaper Laird Landscaping.  They will give you fresh, new ideas for sprucing up your company’s surroundings.  Call Trey Laird and the guys today and have them come out and look around at (281) 578-2795.

Proper Drainage for Your Houston Property.

We are blessed in the Houston area because even though it is only February the ground is thawing from any brief winter cold-snap.  Up north, that event would still be a couple of months away.  Mother nature dictates the condition of your patio, your driveway, etc.  The variance between day and night temperatures may take a toll.

What happens if you have not prepared your property with appropriate drainage?  Standing water can and will cause cracks in your foundation walls.  You simply must be certain that the water on your property is draining properly.  If there is nowhere for the water to go the results could be disastrous.

This potential problem may have a simple fix.  DO NOT just ignore it!  Save your walls now and save tons of money this spring and summer.  It all starts with a phone call to Laird Landscaping.  Houstonians have been trusting the Laird family for their landscaping needs literally for decades.  Give them a call today for an assessment at (281) 578-2795.

It’s Perennial Planting Time.

Sorry Chicago…apologies to Cleveland…and don’t even think about Minneapolis!  This is Houston and our moderate winter temperatures allow us to consider planting those perennials this time of year.  Eat your hearts out up North.  Those of us in the moderate climes of southeast Texas are going to get a head start on spring.

Actually, we are encouraged to plant now simply because the cooler temperatures will facilitate a healthy start.  Learn more about the type of beauty that you want surrounding your Houston home by researching perennials such as coneflowers, the Peruvian lily, and the always popular catmint.  You will find dozens of possibilities.

Start with a phone call to your professional Houston landscape designer - Laird Landscaping.  They were not only voted the best landscaper in Katy, but one of the top ten in ALL of Houston.  We hope that 2017 will be a special year for you and your property.  Make it come to life by relying on Laird Landscaping at (281) 578-2795.

Staying Within Your 2017 Landscaping Budget.

The New Year means new budgets.  Setting certain goals and budgets for your household is vital this time of year.  If you stick with the program it will be a more satisfying 2017.  Are you taking a vacation?  Are you buying a new car?  What “extras” are you planning for in this brand new year?  Somewhere on that list should be a landscaping budget.

Beautifying your home not only gives you and your family more comfort and enjoyment, but increases the value of your property as well.  Consider patios and walkways this year.  If you compare this to a high maintenance deck you can quickly see how you can add value and save at the same time.  Allow for some mulch.  This will prevent loss of moisture, erosion, and control weeds.

Fortunately, we live in beautiful Houston with its moderate year-round temperatures.  Our friends up north have to wait months to implement these property improvement changes.  All you have to do is decide when and how much you wish to invest.  Start the ball rolling now by calling one of the top landscapers in the Houston area, Laird Landscaping at (281) 578-2795.
