Perennial Plants May Increase the Value of Your Houston Area Home.

Are you looking to add plants to your property that provide beauty and stimulate compliments all year round? Here are three types of flora that can bring appeal to your property:

Alstroemeria (Peruvian lily)

The Peruvian lily
comes in shades of purple with dark flecks and last well in bouquets. Alstroemeria aurea (The Peruvian lily) blooms come in shades of yellow and orange.

Aster x frikartii

Delicate-looking flowers on ultra-tough plants tolerate just about any soil type. ‘Mönch’ grows to 2 feet-tall and pumps out 2 1/2-inch lavender-blue flowers almost all year if spent ones are removed.  Wonder of Staffa’ is another favorite with lavender blue blossoms.

Coneflower (Echinacea)

Colorful and super tough, ‘Ruby Star’ from Monrovia nurseries has large pinkish-purple blooms with pronounced coppery centers.  The plant grows 2-feet tall; the flowers are 4 inches across. Among the many showy hybrids are ‘Orange Meadowbrite’, butter-yellow ‘Sunrise’, and reddish-orange ‘Sundown’.

Laird Landscaping of Houston has been proudly serving the community for more than three decades and we feel we're just getting started.

We aren't just a typical landscaping company, we are a full scale architectural design and landscaping as well as hardscaping aficionados. Not many companies can say that. Laird Landscaping prides itself on its autonomous abilities. Simply put, we can do it all. And when we do it all, we can ensure quality and professionalism unrivaled in the Houston area and perhaps this universe.

If you think you have a drab and "unscapable" yard, think again. Your yard is your palette and our professionals; your artists. Let's get busy, shall we?

Your Landscaping Dream Come True.

Anybody with a lawnmower can technically call themselves a "landscaper". At Laird Landscaping, we think a bit more goes into it than that.

We know that mowing the lawn is the easy part. Landscaping requires that all elements are considered. For instance, Houston can often be plagued by heavy rainfall and flooding, which has caused drainage to become one of our specialties. We have designed a virtually foolproof drainage system unique to our company. There is not a drainage problem yet that we have not been able to solve.

We design a landscape that requires low-maintenance. We can create beautiful environments without having to be forced into a high-maintenance situation. Working in harmony with nature, rather than against it.

There is no time like the present. If you have the desire, we have the means to make it happen.

More Than Three Decades of Serving The Houston Area

Laird Landscaping has been serving the Houston area, proudly, for more than 32 years and we are just getting started! We offer an array of services under one roof. Often times, multiple contractors and professionals are hired separately to complete a task that Laird Landscaping can do autonomously.

Why hire a hardscaper separate from a landscaper? Why hire an architect separate from a gardener? The question is, why not hire Laird? We are all those things and many more!
A message can get skewed when there are too many cooks in the kitchen. The gardener can accidentally mow a sprinkler head and then trip over a bush, knocking down the gazebo he didn't know was there. A bit of a stretch? Maybe, but If you'd had hired Laird Landscaping, that wouldn't happen at all. What would happen is we are the one's to do all of those things. Build the gazebo, plant the plants, design the drainage system and be fully aware of how everything works, macrocosmically. No need for yard bureaucracy-- consolidate. We are your one stop shop for yard excellence.

Fall Landscaping...Is Now the Best Time to Plant?

Many people want to know: when is the best time to plant?
Fall is the best time to plant. Why? For one thing, the plants have plenty of time to get established, put out roots, and be ready for spring and summer.

Some landscapers choose from common selections of plants, depriving a neighborhood of uniqueness. Plants should be more than placeholders, they should create diversity and contrast.
A harmonious balance with landscaping and hardscaping is what makes Laird head and shoulders above the rest. Our family owned and operated business prides itself on paying close attention to all aspects of shaping the outdoors into a functionally beautiful masterpiece your family can enjoy for generations. Not just a season.

A good landscape designer not only uses plants but many other aspects of creation. Plants can only do so much. Proper drainage, architecture, and the right botanical selections made are just a few of the key components that go in to creating a picturesque outdoors.

Water collecting outside a property or development can also cause all sorts of problems to develop, which is why it's important that every condo or homeowner association pays attention to any and all drainage issues. And, it's also crucial that drainage systems be properly maintained.

Drainage at a property is often overlooked, but when something goes wrong, the results can be devastating. There have been many cases in Houston of water getting into homes and cars because of a poor drainage system. In the winter, there is the additional danger of water freezing into ice, which can result in a whole slew of problems. We think about all possible scenarios when we survey your property.

A Properly Maintained Drainage System In The Houston Area.

One of the biggest nuisances a homeowner learns is that ‘water is your enemy,' because there are so many ways that water can ruin or destroy home and property. A leak can cause ceilings to chip away, pipes to burst, and pools of water to collect inside.
Water can seep into rugs or behind walls, and cause mold to develop (which can incur serious even deadly results if ingested) But it's not just inside where water can wreak havoc.

Interested In Fencing In Houston?

Interested in fencing? No, not that kind, Zorro. We mean building a fence on your property. Maybe it’s to divide that nosey neighbor who pops up every time he hears you. He’s six feet and your wall is five. You’ll never have privacy! So, what do you do? You build the fence of your desire. Seven feet tall will block out most nosey neighbors (unless you live next door to a chatty NBA center who exceeds seven feet in height).

Sometimes you need a fence to separate an area. Maybe to keep the dogs in a designated area or to keep the kids out of the pool area. We can work with you to figure the exact dimensions that are the most conducive to serving the functionality and comfort you desire.

Whether is a single brick wall, an iron fence or a tall cedar wall to completely enclose your property, we can cover you. Literally.

Call us today for all of your fencing needs. If you’re looking to become a swordsman, give us a call anyway. We can probably build you an outdoor practice area with storage for your épée.

Adding A Water Feature Can Improve The Sight And Sound Of Your Back Yard

Is your beautifully landscaped yard missing something? Maybe a fountain is just what your space needs. By installing a water element, you'll add life and motion to your backyard oasis.

Enjoy relaxing on your patio while listening to the soothing sound of water, your property will be instantly transformed into a retreat. If you enjoy watching Houston's fauna, moving water elements attract more native birds than standing water alone. This added feature will give your space a more tranquil ambiance and an upgraded look all in one.

Water features come in many shapes and sizes. Some look like glazed pots that give off a soothing bubbling sound and motion, other types include a shallow in-ground stream that cascades into a swimming pool. Perhaps a hanging wall fountain is more your style or maybe a small tiled fountain pool nestled away in a corner. The options are endless.

Another added benefit of incorporating a water feature into your property is that the water noise can drown out city and road sounds, turning your yard into a spa like feel.

For more information on the advantages of installing a water feature, contact Houston area Laird Landscaping at 281-578-2795 or online at www.lairdlandscaping.com.

What Are The Steps And Materials That Go Into Installing A Beautifully Paved Patio?

There are many steps and materials that go into installing a beautifully paved patio, some of which you may not be aware of. One of which is polymeric sand.

What is polymeric sand?

Polymeric sand is a substance used to fill the joints when installing pavers. It is a very fine material, when mixed with water, create a bonding agent. Polymeric sand is the medium that interlocks pavers while keeping them secured in place.

It is possible to use regular sand, but to make certain you enjoy years of low maintenance out of your hardscape polymeric sand is the way to go. There are many advantages to using polymeric sand, some of which include:

Deterring weeds. Weeds are annoying land seem to grow pretty much anywhere overnight. Polymeric sand can't prevent a weed from ever popping up between your pavers, but it will make it considerably more difficult. Simply using regular sand offers zero resistance for weeds sprouting up.

Prolonging the durability of your patio. Polymeric sand promotes strength and longevity when using it to install pavers. Polymeric sand also lessens the amount of water that can get between the pavers into the base materials.

Preventing washouts. It only takes a heavy rain to get wash away regular sand, leaving paver joints with no protection. This is actually a very common problem with using regular sand. This won't happen when using polymeric sand.

Enjoy your paved hardscaping for years to come. For more information, contact Houston area Laird Landscaping at 281-578-2795 or online at  www.lairdlandscaping.com

Low Maintenance Landscaping Ideas On A Limited Budget

If you're looking to spruce up your yard, it is important to consider your budget. If the budget is small and low maintenance, there are many options and we can help you maximize your space as well as your budget.

Patios and Walkways

Wooden decks need regular maintenance such as painting and wood treating. Instead of creating an expensive deck, a ground-level patio can be constructed with patio pavers made of brick or stone. If properly sealed, once your patio is installed the only care it needs is to be hosed off with water occasionally or swept to ensure the patio remains clean.

Go Grassless

If you'd like to cut back on your water bill, removing most of the grass from the yard is an option. Invest in hardscaping that will stand the test of time for years to come. Shrubs, and other low maintenance plants can cover the ground in areas that are free of grass. Potted native plants can also provide greenery without putting a dent in your wallet.

Mulch It Over

Mulch prevents erosion, weeds and moisture loss. The mulch should be spread around tree bases, shrubs and flower beds. Bark, sawdust and wood chip are relatively inexpensive. Stone and plastic liners can be placed around trees and flower beds and mulch inside of them. Although stone is more expensive, it requires relatively little maintenance.

Low maintenance and low budget options are endless. For more information, contact Houston area Laird Landscaping at 281-578-2795 or online at www.lairdlandscaping.com.
